Mid-Autumn Festival 2007 @ Chinatown and Singapore River
The celebration of Mid-Autumn Festival is a Chinese traditional where families gather for reunions at a time when the moon is at its fullest and brightest, enjoying mooncakes and pamelos with a cup of fragrant tea. The Festival celebrates the legend of Chang Er, the lady of the Moon, who is believed to have floated to the moon after swallowing the elixir of eternal life. From 8th--30th September, colourful lanterns will frame the streets of Chinatown and Singapore River, complemented by spectacular festive lighting and street bazaars.
The Mid-Autumn Festival 2007 was officially launched by Mr. S R Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore on 15th September 2007. The main throughfare of Chinatown along New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen Street was transformed into a street festival. with a colourful street procession and performances from 23 contingents and over 700 participants.
For the first time in Singapore, the spectacular Akita Kanto Parade from Japan was featured on this year's Opening and Light-up A Kanto is a large bamboo frame that holds of candle-lit lanterns, each representing an ear of rice. Accompanied by flutes, Kanto performers balance the Kanto on their foreheads, shoulder and lower backs, demonstrating tremendous agility and steady balancing skill.
Another iconic feature in the celebrations is the street light-up and decorations, display 38 fairies, playing a varied range of traditional Chinese instruments. The entired light-up has taken up 13000 man-hours to complete, using 10 000 metres of fairy lighting, 6 tonnes of steel, 10 000 light bulbs and countless amounts of other materials
From September to November, Singapore celebrates the three ethnic festivals of Mid-Autumn Festival, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali. Visitors can look forward to a first-hand culture experience of festivals through a host of activities specially designed for them. The celebrations are a perfect showcase of Singapore's multicultural heritage.
